Imagine if you had taken a class in high school or college that was called, “Creating and Sustaining Fulfilling Relationships.” If this had been a required course for each of us, we might all have more rewarding relationships. This is not to say that without it we cannot have great relationships; of course we can; but it might be a whole lot easier if we were better prepared. This is true of anything in life, the more prepared we are for something, typically the smoother it goes. If you have never been to Europe and just show up there one day without having done any research about where you want to go, what you want to do and see, it will likely be fun, exciting, and even adventurous, but it might be easier with a planned itinerary.
Think about what kind of ‘education’ you received about creating and sustaining a healthy relationship. What role models did you have? Would you want to replicate what you saw? If you can say yes, great! Just do what your parents (or other role models did). But, if on the other hand, you didn’t like a lot of what you witnessed (e.g.: fighting, not listening well to each other, disrespect), than it may be time for a RELATIONSHIP EDUCATION! This does not require taking the SAT’s or going back to college. It is simple to learn new communication and other relationship skills. The challenge can be implementing them consistently. But with knowledge and practice, there is no reason you can’t have a healthy, exciting, and gratifying relationship.
Because I believe we can all benefit from learning or even brushing up on our relationship skills, I have written a manual for couples (or singles who are preparing themselves for an awesome relationship). It is called Relationship Rulebook. It is short, sweet and to the point, providing the nuts and bolts of Happy Relationships. It initially was designed for couples about to embark on marriage, but can be helpful to anyone in any stage of a relationship.
